The Gua Sha Face massage set
WHAT IS GUA SHA?
Gua sha is actually an ancient Chinese practice for energy flow and blood circulation. The technique can be used on the whole body and is traditionally quite vigorous
- using a flat tool, the skin is scraped until red.
- using the roller for the face. The small one is perfect for areas nearby the eyes
But this new resurgence of the trend is a gentler form. Using a smaller version of the tool one applies a firm pressure over the face, scraping across the skin in long strokes.
The eventual effect of the practice results in better skin. Blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and skin elasticity are all improved, while things like muscle tensions and wrinkles are reduced.
HOW TO USE THE MASSAGE SET AND APPLY THE THE GUA SHA TECHNIQUE?
This set consists of 3 pieces:
- Double sided roller
- small roller
- scraping board
How to use the scraping board:
You can use the Gua Sha scraping board on your face and your body.
Gua Sha consists of scraping the skin with a polished jade stone (a bao yü). The smooth side is placed firmly on the oiled skin and moved in one direction along the muscles or acupuncture meridians, in strokes of about 15 cm long. This firm scraping causes outflow of blood from peripheral capillaries (petechiae) and may cause subcutaneous bruising, which usually disappears after 2 to 4 days. The colour varies according to the stagnation of the patient’s blood (which may be correlated to the nature of the disease) from dark blue/black to light pink, usually a shade of red. Although the spots may look painful, they are not. Patients usually feel an immediate change and progress.
We recommend to use our Green Goddess oil to apply on your face before you use the Gua Sha scraping board.

We have two different face rollers made of jade namely:
– The Gua Sha face roller jade: This roller has a big roller and a small roller. The small roller can be used for the area around the eyes.
– The Gua Sha facial roller jade ribs: this roller has two rollers that are the same size, one of the rollers has ribs.
The face roller, as the name suggests, is used on the face to promote beauty. By moving the roller over the face, you stimulate blood circulation and slow down ageing. This Gua Sha facial roller has a large roller and a small roller. The small roller can be used for the area around the eyes.

How to use a Gua Sha roller?
For good result, you should use the face roller daily for 15 minutes. You roll with the roller on your forehead from your eyebrows up towards the hairline. Then roll under the eyes from the bridge of the nose out towards the ears. Do the same for the point next to the nostril and for the point exactly in the middle above the lip. For the area under the lips, you can follow the jaw line. In our blog you can find a number of video tutorials explaining exactly how to use the Gua Sha face roller.
What is jade?
Jade is a collective name for different minerals. Most of the time Jade is green, but the gemstone can also be white, pink, yellow, brown, purple or red. The best known forms of jade are jadeïet and nephrite. Jade has been seen as a beloved stone for centuries, especially the green variety. In many cultures, the gemstone stood for health and for urgency.

IS GUA SHA SAFE?
Yes! Although we wouldn’t recommend DIY-ing the intense, full-body version, however an at-home routine with the rollers for the face is safe.
DOES GUA SHA HURT?
If used properly, the Gua sha tool shouldn’t hurt. After all, you’re determining the pressure you use and the skin you apply it to. If your skin becomes irritated or sore, reduce the pressure or cease using it altogether.
HOW DOES GUA SHA WORK?
Although you can do this without, most practitioners recommend using a facial oil beforehand to smooth the skin. Holding the tool at a 45 degree angle, scrape against the skin in an upwards and outwards motion. Start from the centre of the face and work around. For maximum results, try doing this every day for about one to three minutes.
However, unlike a crystal roller, your Gua sha tool shouldn’t be cold. The cold tends to constrict blood vessels, which is the opposite of what you want. Skip the fridge.
Jade – In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that jade has the ability to help balance your inner energies and relax the nervous system. Functionality wise, it’s considered best for reducing puffiness and encouraging lymphatic function. Jade rollers reportedly have a little more resistance when applied to the skin, which has prompted some users to find that jade is best for them when it comes to lifting and contouring.
